"Don’t fall for the okeedoke!"

I was a high school freshman when a motivational speaker said these words, and the phrase soon caught on in the theater department.

We produced a lot of shows each year, and had a very limited budget, so the sets weren’t always perfect. Show after show, we would "fall for the okeedoke," as our sets weren’t quite up to professional standards. The pinnacle of the phrase occurred in our version of "Pirates of Penzance," where we named our massive half-ship the "U.S.S. Okeedoke."

It was mediocrity displayed proudly.

I grew up in a Christian bookstore, heavily entrenched in the commercial Christian sub-culture: contemporary Christian music, Christian videos, Christian T-shirts, Christian video games and Precious Moments™ figurines. I spent my life fighting for this culture, defending it constantly. I wore the shirts, watched the videos, played the games and listened to the music. The defense was always the same: it’s almost as good as the secular counterpart.

I ultimately became frustrated. Why was everything in the Christian industry so far below the secular standard? Shouldn’t we be producing the most creative, influential works of art? Since our God created everything, shouldn’t we worship our Father by being creative ourselves?

At one time, the Church led the artistic community. Michelangelo. Bach. Handel. These artists served the Church and glorified God through their high standards of excellence. When did the Church become an imitator, rather than an originator of creative expression?

Okeedoke seeks to redefine Christian multimedia.

By redefining Christian multimedia, we also seek to redefine the term “okeedoke.” We believe Okeedoke will one day bring to mind the best art the creative world has to offer, completely transforming what people currently think of as “Christian” movies, music and design. We’re excited about the journey, and hope that you’ll enjoy being a part of it.
